Puppy Care

CKC Registered

We are premium members, in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club. Your pups parents are registered and have four generation pedigrees. This means that their lineage can be traced for generations, this ensures you are indeed getting a purebred Havanese. Every litter is registered and then each pup is also individually registered, in their litter name. Your official CKC certificate will be mailed out to you when you have had your pet altered, which should be done after one year of age. Every pup registered, we keep all certificates on file.

Litter Training

Our puppies are trained to toilet in a litter. We use a boot tray that has a small lip, filled with natural, eco-green bio degradable wood pellets. We choose this option over others as it is a natural product, likened to the great outdoors ( which is the ultimate goal) and not plastic like fake grass. We do not want pups voiding on plastic or strictly pee pads which are not far off from your area rug, tea towel, or jacket. Puppies whelping, socializing and play areas are kept extremely clean. This is what makes litter training work so well. It is very clear to our puppies that they are to eat, sleep, play and rest in a clean area. We place puppies in the litter when we see the signs they need to toilet, starting at three weeks of age. As puppies gain more mobility, we expand their area in relation to their ability to use the litter and keep other spaces clean. We have many areas around our home puppies spend time in. We move their litter and change their play area intentionally to give puppies the opportunity to strengthen adaptability skills.

When pups go home, they are litter trained. Unless you are home full time, and willing to get up several times at night, you will benefit from placing a litter in your safety pen area. If you are diligent to toilet puppy outdoors when you are available, your pup will eventually stop using the litter as their body and ability mature. A dogs fist choice is to eliminate outside of their home. Providing a litter does not per-long outdoor training, as long as you toilet your pup, when you are home, as if no litter was available. The litter is for times your pup would have no choice but to accident. Middle of the night, if you are held up and get home late, must go away for more than an hour et….Our effort in this area has proven to be extremely helpful for owners. Some choose to place pellets outside and toilet full time day and night, others a combination. House training has been very successful for diligent families as puppies understood toileting is meant to happen in a very specific area, right from three weeks old.

Socialization

Our pups are whelped and raised in our home. Touch, smells, sounds and sights of family life are part of our puppies very first experiences. This is fundamental in stimulating responses that last a life time. Puppies are intentionally handled at specific times, in intentional ways  to promote their ability to handle stress and  changes as adults.  Our handling is a balance of stimulation to challenge skills and periods of rest and quiet to develop separation confidence. It is critical to not over of under stimulate young pups, to provide affection in a manner that encourages confidence and problem solving. We highly value our mothers feeling relaxed and safe in her surroundings, this aids greatly in puppies all round health and level of trainability. A balance of human companionship, indoor & outdoor exploration, rest and canine playmates provides valuable mental, emotional & physical balance.
